The smartphone market is growing rapidly all over the world and manufacturers are trying to improve their design year by year. However, it may be surprising to know that some manufacturers rely solely on outsourcing in order to take care of this issue. The recent report by Counterpoint Research revealed that Motorola has chosen to outsource the majority of smartphone design.
Smartphone manufacturer Motorola, which mainly sells mid-range and budget smartphones, tops the list as 90% of its smartphones are designed by third parties. The report is based on the first half of 2024. The manufacturer that ranks second on the list is Xiaomi and has 78% of its smartphones designed by third parties.
The other three companies in the top five are Vivo (52%), Huawei (44%), and HONOR (40%). The company that does 100% of the design of its smartphones in-house is Apple. On the other hand, OPPO Group designs 39% of its smartphones by third parties.
On the other hand, Samsung has 22% of its smartphones designed by third parties. Samsung products designed by third-party companies include lower-end models from the Galaxy M series or A-series. Samsung is gradually moving from producing its models in third-party companies based in China to its own factory located in India.
