Reliance Jio True 5G network extends battery life by up to 40%, says official

Reliance Jio’s True 5G network can improve smartphone battery life by up to 40%, a company official pointed out during the company’s second quarter (Q2) earnings call of FY25. The telecom provider leverages standalone architecture (SA) along with other technical features for its 5G services in India and allocates spectrum bandwidth based on the application, helping it to improve the duration of battery life and efficiency of smartphones.

Better battery life on Jio True 5G network

Telecom providers in India, such as Bharti Airtel, use a non-standalone access (NSA) approach that involves deploying 5G technology on top of existing 4G infrastructure. However, Reliance Jio has taken a different route by adopting SA which uses the 700 MHz band for rural areas and the 3.5 GHz band for urban centers. Additionally, it has also reserved the 26 GHz mmWave band for high-capacity applications. This is managed by the company’s intelligent spectrum management, which allocates appropriate spectrum based on usage.

This approach helps the telco improve smartphone battery life by 20-40%. according to Kiran, Thomas, Chairman, Reliance, Jio, Infocomm, Limited. The company has rolled out Voice over New Radio (VoNR) – a 5G wireless communications standard that routes calls over the 5G network and is said to provide better voice quality, reduced call setup time and increased security.

Reliance Jio also uses other technologies such as user equipment (UE) capacity-based layer management for enhanced carrier aggregation, time division duplex (TDD) interference across spectrum bands and the division of the dedicated network. It has programmable networks with beam management, traffic steering and energy efficiency based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

The company official also points out that Jio’s True 5G network can provide better location accuracy without relying solely on GPS. It calculates location based on the angle of arrival of each beam, promising positioning accuracy of up to 10 meters.
