Joe Biden will meet US President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday after the US president pledged to return power in an orderly manner to the Republican who defeated him in the elections just four years ago.
Trump – who never conceded his loss in the 2020 election – made a remarkable return to the presidency in the November 5 election, cementing what is expected to be more than a decade of US politics dominated by his hard-right stance.
This type of meeting between the outgoing and incoming presidents was considered common, but Trump did not invite Biden to attend a meeting after making unsubstantiated claims of election fraud that culminated in the Capitol riot on January 6.
Trump also broke precedent by skipping Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021, but the White House said the president would attend the ceremony.
The White House announced on Saturday that the Democrat’s meeting with Trump will be held in the Oval Office, as the former president’s return to power approaches.
Biden in January will join the small club of US presidents to return power to their predecessor in the White House – with the previous example being when President Benjamin Harrison returned it to Grover Cleveland in the 19th century.
