Toyota’s Turbocharged AWD GR86 Rally Legacy Concept is (almost) exactly the sports car I’d want to own

I love sports cars, but no company makes the kind of sports car I would want to buy and live with in Los Angeles. Toyota has come very close, despite its newest cars Sima Cars Showroomthe GR86 Rally heritage concept. It has a turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive system JR Corollathe gorgeous Castrol paint and styling upgrades are an invitation back to the coolest Celica rally cars of the 1990s.

Toyota says the GR Corolla’s 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine is suitable GR86The engine bay and transmission tunnel, as did the all-wheel drive system, but the swap necessitated a custom front subframe and engine mounts. The engine has a high-performance intercooler, oil cooler and a racing ECU. The GR86 Rally model produces the same 300 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, but Toyota says “there is potential to increase these numbers with further tuning.”

The AWD swap requires taking the axles, wheel hubs and spindles from a GR Corolla, and the Rally has custom coilovers and control arms at all four corners. The rear differential and housing were also brought over from the GR Corolla, which “…maintains the factory gear ratios, electronics functionality, and power distribution.” Instead of the six-speed manual transmission in the GR Corolla or New 8-speed automatic transmissionThe GR86 Rally appears to have a racing sequential transmission.

Probably my favorite rally car of all time is the ST205 Toyota Celica GT-Four introduced in 1994 – you may remember it as The car was banned from the 1995 World Rally Championship season Due to illegal overtaking of the turbo restrictor. While I prefer The ST205’s funny four-eyed front endIts early 1990s predecessor, the ST185 GT-Four, also competed in the World Rally Championship in the same white, red and green Castrol livery, which Toyota replicated with the GR86 Rally.

Its main livery is Halo White, with red and green decals and has a similar overall design as the Celicas but with modern Gazoo Racing graphics. I like the four massive rally lights that have been added to the nose, and the large rear spoiler is a nice throwback to the more brutal Celica GT-Four variants. The GR86 Rally also has red mud flaps, white Speedline wheels, and a custom exhaust system with two pipes coming out of where the license plate normally goes. It feels rad as hell, especially with the taller ride height.

The interior of the GR86 Rally is beautifully stripped. It has a pair of Sparco bucket seats with red six-point harnesses, a white roll cage, a Sparco racing steering wheel, a blank dashboard with a few switches and dials, a racing digital instrument cluster and a long sequence knob. fund.

Toyota says the GR86 Rally Car is just a concept car, but it’s clear from the build that it’s something the company is seriously considering, with Toyota Group Marketing Vice President Mike Tripp saying it’s “a testament to Toyota’s enduring passion for rally racing.” We created this design for GR and Toyota Rally fans, it is a fantasy car come to life, and our way of celebrating our past achievements and the possibility of the World Rally Championship returning to the United States.

Recent rumors have pointed to Toyota’s exit New silica; The company even She teased it in an official video this week. Offering the GR86 Rally as a GR-Four production model would probably be too expensive, but using what you’ve learned as a basis New Celica GT-Four? This is exactly what I want. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sports car like the GR86, especially since I live near some of the best roads in the world, but I don’t want a sports car like that all the time.

Give me a sports car chassis (preferably with a rebound rather than a trunk like the GR86) with a turbo engine, all-wheel drive, a raised suspension, and off-road tires. Think of the little Porsche 911 Dakar. Offer it with a true rally-style automatic transmission, the same one that debuted in the GR Corolla perhaps, and give it fun design cues. That would still be fun on the canyon road, but it’s more livable in LA traffic and with LA potholes. Plus, I can take it on all the great dirt tracks in Southern California, or even in the snowy mountains. I’m so sold.

There is one way Toyota can cut costs and do the GR86 Rally now, or perhaps with the next generation model. Take advantage of the partnership with Subaru, and let them build a version of the GR-Four that will be the BRZ Wilderness. A lifted BRZ with a hood scoop and ridiculous body cladding? That would be sick.
