Volkswagen has decided to recall approximately 115,000 Beetle and Passat vehicles due to potentially serious defects in the airbag system.

Problems with the driver’s side airbag
according to NHTSA Notice, The 114,478 affected vehicles have a driver-side front air bag inflator with fuel that can degrade over time from exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and riding in high temperatures. This could cause the blower to explode, hitting the driver or other passengers with sharp metal fragments and causing serious injury or death.
Volkswagen and the Safety Administration said no incidents related to this potential defect have been reported, but the recall was initiated out of an “abundance of caution.”
According to the report, the recalled vehicles are equipped with Takata SDI-D driver front air inflators. Takata airbags have been the subject of a decade and a half of recalls spanning tens of millions of vehicles, with at least 28 deaths attributed to defective Takata airbags.
